BEIJING--Chinese shares closed lower Tuesday with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.72 percent, or 48.11 points, to close at 2,754.58.

The Shenzhen Component Index fell 1.37 percent, or 170.38 to finish at 12,268.19.
