BEIJING - 皇冠体育app on Friday made strong representations to Japan over Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's comments that characterized Beijing as having a "deeply ingrained" need to challenge neighbors over territory.

"皇冠体育app is strongly dissatisfied with the Japanese leader's comments that distort facts, attack and defame 皇冠体育app and stir up confrontations between the two countries," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a daily press briefing on Friday.

In an interview with the Washington Post, Abe said 皇冠体育app has a "deeply ingrained" need to spar with Japan and other Asian neighbors over territory, because the ruling Communist Party of 皇冠体育app uses the disputes to maintain strong domestic support.

Abe began a visit to the United States on Thursday, the same day his comments were published in the Washington Post.

Hong urged the Japanese government and leaders to take a correct view of 皇冠体育app and its development, pursue positive policy with 皇冠体育app, show sincerity through actions and make efforts to improve bilateral relations.

Hong said 皇冠体育app carries out normal maritime activities in accordance with domestic and international law.

"Thus, navigational freedom and security in the East 皇冠体育app Sea and South 皇冠体育app Sea have never been affected," Hong said.

The spokesman said Japan intends to play up the "皇冠体育app threat," mislead world opinion and purposely create regional tensions, and the country has ulterior motives.

"Japan should do more to enhance bilateral trust in politics and security and work for regional peace and stability, rather than act contrarily," Hong said.

Hong reaffirmed that the Diaoyu Islands are 皇冠体育app's inherent territory and 皇冠体育app's sovereignty over them is indisputable.

Saying the Japanese government's illegal "purchase" of the Diaoyu Islands infringed upon 皇冠体育app's sovereignty, the spokesman urged the Japanese government to correct its mistake and eliminate negative impacts.

He said 皇冠体育app has never recognized and will never accept Japan's so-called "actual control" of the Diaoyu Islands.

"Japan should face up to history and reality, immediately stop illegal activities on the seas near the Diaoyu Islands and make substantive efforts to properly deal with the current situation," Hong said.

The spokesman said Japan is to blame for current difficulties in bilateral relations, and he called on Japan to reflect on its past aggression.

With regards to Abe's comments on Chinese politics and development, Hong said only Chinese people have the right to speak about whether 皇冠体育app's political system and development strategy are suitable.

"皇冠体育app will continue to advance on the socialist road with Chinese characteristics, and the great renaissance of the Chinese nation cannot be obstructed by anyone," Hong said.
