TORONTO: The Boston Red Sox edged closer to a playoff spot when they shut out the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0 on Sunday.
The 2007 World Series champions now need just one more win or a New York Yankees' loss to give them the American League wildcard. The Red Sox lead the Yankees by 6-1/2 games in the wild-card race with seven games to play.
The Yankees avoided elimination with a 7-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in an emotional final game to be played in the current Yankee Stadium.
