Tsai Ming-liang: Winning the world with simplicity

In 1994, Taiwan-based director Tsai Ming-liang won the Golden Lion for Vive L'Amour, a film depicting the emotional worlds of two men and a woman with just a bit more than 100 sentences of dialogue. This film reflected the empty and helpless inner hearts of people today and the extremely simplistic approach took the judges in Venice by awe. Last year, Tsai landed a Grand Jury Prize for his film Stray Dogs, about a man and his two children living on the fridges of society in Taipei.
