Singapore confirms new SARS case ( 2003-09-09 17:08) (Agencies)
Singapore's Ministry of Health confirmed Tuesday that a 27-year-old man had
contracted SARS, the world's first case of the deadly virus since the World
Health Organization declared a global outbreak over on July 5.
"A repeat of the PCR tests was done at the National University Hospital
laboratory today and was confirmed positive," the ministry said in a statement,
referring to PCR technology that amplifies genetic material in samples from
patients to test for SARS.
SARS originated in southern »Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp and was spread early this year to 30
countries by travelers. It infected nearly 8,500 people globally. More than 800
died, including 33 in Singapore.
