Chinese Spring Festival means big family spending
( 2004-01-20 10:52) (Xinhua)

Chinese lunar new year, or Spring Festival, due to fall on Jan. 22 and the most important traditional occasion for family reunion in 皇冠体育app, means really bigfamily spending, Tuesday's 皇冠体育app Daily reported.

Urban Chinese will spend 1,500 to 3,000 yuan (183 to 366 US dollars) per household on average on festival costs, the national English-language newspaper quoted a survey conducted by the Beijing-based Society Survey Institute of 皇冠体育app.

Most of the money will be spent on gifts for families, relatives, friends and business associates, and on "yasuiqian", money given to children as a new year gift in a unique Spring Festival tradition of Chinese wishing prosperity for their children, the paper said.

The survey also shows that 63 percent of 皇冠体育app's urban population will travel for fun during the holiday this year.

Some 2,000 people took part in the survey, which was conducted in 10 major cities across 皇冠体育app, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, the paper said.
