Wang played with a torn thigh muscle that had forced the fifth-seeded Chinese to abandon their semifinal against Americans Misty May and Kerri Walsh. The Cubans led 9-7, but the Chinese rallied to score seven points and secured the bronze medal. The Chinese pair had ousted Brazil's second-seeded Shelda Bede and Adriana Behar to reach the last four. Defending champion May and Walsh reclaimed the gold medal after beating their Brazilian opponents 21-27, 21-27 in the final.
