After days of sauna-like weather, Beijingers finally had a cool night's sleep Friday and woke up to the rhythm of rain.

Most parts of the city reported drizzle to moderate rain on Saturday, when the average temperature dropped to 23 degrees Celsius.

A weather report released by the city's meteorological station at 10:40 a.m. said the city center will have moderate rain, while some areas in the suburbs will report heavy rain in the afternoon and evening.

Prior to the rain, the city's road traffic management commission installed automatic monitoring systems under 25 viaducts downtown for real-time observation of rain water pooling on the ground. The new device will help minimize the impact of therain to road traffic.

Torrential rain last summer turned a road underneath a viaduct close to Beijing's western railway station into a "lake", which stranded pedestrians, bicycles, cars and even buses.

Saturday's rain, however, is not comparable to that. The weather report said it will continue into the night, but the wholecity will be bathed in sunshine again Sunday, when the daytime temperature will climb to 31 degrees Celsius at least.

The meteorological station forecasts the average daytime temperature in Beijing will again hover around 35 degrees next week, but it will not be as humid and stuffy as the passing week.
