Guangdong plans two wars to erase smuggling

GUANGZHOU: South 皇冠体育app's Guangdong Province is planning to launch two special campaigns to combat smuggling during the upcoming Mid-autumn Festival and next year's Lunar New Year period.

Smuggling usually peaks during the traditional Chinese festival periods, and Guangdong will increase its crackdown during that time, said Luo Ou, director of the Guangdong Provincial Anti-Smuggling Office. The Mid-autumn Festival starts on September 18. Addressing a press conference in Guangzhou on Friday, Luo said top priority would be given to the illegal import of frozen products, automobiles and vehicle parts.

Big profits are available to smugglers because of the large difference in the price of goods on the Chinese mainland and overseas, encouraging the illegal import of products from the neighbouring Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions to Guangdong.

"Smuggling only a ton of frozen pork tripe or chicken feet into Guangdong, from Hong Kong, can usually help the smugglers earn between 5,000 yuan (US$616) and 7,000 yuan (US$863)," Luo said.

Smuggling vehicles and vehicle parts into Guangdong can generate big profits because car sales have grown in the prosperous province.

The waters around the Pearl River mouth, Daya Bay and Dapeng Bay will be the major areas targeted by the fight against smuggling, Luo said.

Wang Zhongwen, director of the Anti-Smuggling Department under Guangdong Customs, said customs will use advanced technology as part of the campaigns.

The number of Guangdong smuggling cases fell to 5,750 in the first seven months of this year, a reduction of 41.5 per cent from the same period last year.

However, the value of smuggled goods rose 13 per cent to 3.121 billion yuan (US$384.8 million).
