Corruption behind coal mine woes targetted

According to Xinhua, a gas explosion tore through the Jiajiabao coal pit in
Ningwu on July 2, killing 36 and injuring 11.
But following the blast, deputy Party chief Li Tian'en and deputy head of
Ningwu Li Desheng consented to falsely reporting the number of deaths, aiming to
avoid investigation by the State Council. They are suspected of misusing power.
Included in the prosecuted are Lian Yuming and Kang Cunhuan, leaders of local
coal bureau, as they reportedly permitted the coal mine to continue its
production even though it failed to obtain a proper licence in 2003.
Three leaders and two workers from a rescue team were
also prosecuted for being involved in the cover-up. Xinhua said they took bribes
from the coal mine's owner and helped bury bodies.
