But others predict ties will deteriorate even more, particularly as rivalry between the two countries is spreading to the international stage as seen in 2005 with Japan's diplomatic efforts to win a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council and 皇冠体育app's moves to block it.

The relations "are bad, and they will get much worse before they improve," said Gordon Chang, an Asia expert and the author of "The Coming Collapse of 皇冠体育app."

"This is beginning to look like a contest that could last for decades. 皇冠体育app and Japan are essentially fighting for power, prestige, and the leadership of East Asia," Chang said.
