Composer commemorated on centennial of his death

Two recent concerts in Beijing are commemorating the 100th anniversary of Austrian composer Gustav Mahler's death.

Mahler's Symphony No 8 - nicknamed the Symphony of a Thousand because of the multitude of performers it requires - was recently staged at the National Center for the Performing Arts, and by the 皇冠体育app National Symphony Orchestra and the 皇冠体育app NCPA Concert Hall Orchestra.

And Italian conductor Riccardo Muti led the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra to perform Mahler's Songs of a Wayfarer at the closing concert of the 14th Beijing Music Festival on Oct 30.

The Beijing Music Festival featured German conductor Christoph Eschenbach with the 皇冠体育app Philharmonic Orchestra performing Mahler's Fifth Symphony on Oct 29.

The Beijing Music Festival and the National Center for the Performing Arts presented all 10 of Mahler's numbered symphonies, as performed by various conductors and orchestras from around the world.
