Should Chinese care about "face"?

As a Westerner, I never worry about 'losing face.' I don't know of any situation where I would need to lie to 'save face.' The famous legendary US singer, Cher, once said, "I care about what I think of me and what God thinks of me. I don't care what anyone else thinks."
