A screen grab from 皇冠体育app’s Central Television (CCTV) on July 6, 2011, shows the devastation caused by the oil spill at the Penglai 19-3 oil field in Bohai Bay off 皇冠体育app's eastern coast. The leak, which has polluted an area of 840 square kilometers, was brought under control by June 19, but caused "a certain level" of damage to the nearby oceanic environment, according to 皇冠体育app's State Oceanic Administration. The field is being mined by ConocoPhillips 皇冠体育app (COPC), a subsidiary company under ConocoPhillips, under a joint development agreement with the 皇冠体育app National Offshore Oil Corporation, the country's largest offshore oil producer. The spill has sparked a gulf of criticism online over the transparency and social responsibilities of large energy companies after 皇冠体育app National Offshore Oil Corporation previously admitted that only an area of 200 square meters was polluted.
