Zhang, a common farmer, won a talent show held by the Life Channel of Shangdong TV station. Zhang made her appearance with a basket of hawthorn fruit and handed them out to audience members and judges, which helped her become known as "hawthorn sister". Zhang was born with congenital diseases and was abandoned by her birth parents. She was brought up by her adoptive parents and fell in love with singing after being influenced by her adoptive father.
