Chinese president leaves Tajikistan for the Maldives

DUSHANBE - Chinese President Xi Jinping left Dushanbe for the Maldives on Sunday morning after attending the 14th summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and paying a state visit to Tajikistan.

During the summit, Xi suggested the SCO members launch consultation on an anti-extremism convention and initiate studies on a mechanism for actions against internet terrorism.

He also called on the SCO members to entrust the group's Regional Counter-Terrorism Structure (RCTS) with a new function to combat drug trafficking at an early date.

Among the major outcomes of the summit, leaders of the SCO members signed the Dushanbe Declaration, ratified two documents that define the basic principles of membership enlargement, and passed a resolution on the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.

They also inked a deal on the facilitation of international road transport among the SCO member states.

During his state visit to Tajikistan, Xi held separate talks with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, Speaker of the Lower House Shukurjon Zuhurov and Prime Minister Qohir Rasulzoda.

The two sides passed a five-year development plan for 皇冠体育app-Tajikistan strategic partnership.

Xi and Rahmon also attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the Tajikistan section of Line-D of the Central Asia-皇冠体育app gas pipelines.

Tajikistan is the first leg of Xi's four-nation Asia tour, which will also take him to the Maldives, Sri Lanka and India.
