Shock waves destroy historic sites

Most of the historic buildings in the Kathmandu Valley were destroyed in Saturday's powerful earthquake. The magnitude-8.1 quake flattened at least 90 percent of public squares, Buddhist stupas and Hindu temples in the valley, state-run Nepal TV reported. The Kathmandu Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a collection of seven locations around the Nepal's capital, which lies at a crossroads of ancient Asian civilizations. Among the landmarks destroyed was the historic 60-meter-high Dharahara Tower, built in 1832 for the queen of Nepal. A jagged stump 10 meters high is all that remains of the lighthouse-like structure.
